A clinical trial tests whether newly developed treatments, not currently available, are better than existing treatments, but before a clinical trial can start, the new treatment is rigorously tested. When those tests are complete, a clinical trial starts and there are four different parts or phases of a clinical trial-Phases I-IV-Each phase cannot begin until the previous phase has been completed.
ACTNoW® is an NHS resource created to provide detailed information about clinical trials for patients and members of the public, aiming to improve the clinical trials process across the North of England.
The Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Unit (MRC-CTU) has kindly given ACTNoW® permission to link to their website for patient/public information.
